How far? It´s 70 k!
”Jättelångt” is Swedish for ”very far”. And it’s also the name of a race held on a mid-June Saturday every year since 2009, a race which will take you from the little fishing village of Grisslehamn some 100 km north of Stockholm to the picturesque town of Norrtälje. The distance is around 70 km, and you run along a part of the Roslagsleden trail that was actually officially opened by the first Jättelångt race! You will run on paths and scramble over rocks by the coast as well as on smaller country roads. You will run along the open sea, in forests, over fields and in the open early summer landscape. It’s all very Swedish, complete with those red cottages with white corners! The trail is marked with permanent orange dots on trees and fence posts, and we have added some plastic strips in tricky sections. So you should be able to find your way… but a few years ago we introduced a ”get lost” warranty – so keep your eyes open! There are a number of stops for food and drink, but we advise you to bring some water and snacks, and also your mobile phone – just in case! Public transport in the area is excellent. We also offer a bus service (which is timed with the early morning bus from Stockholm) from the finish in Norrtälje to the start in Grisslehamn, and your luggage will be transported from the start to the finish line. Speaking of the finish – there will be a party! You’ll get food and drink, you can chat about the race with old and new friends, and you can cheer on your co-runners as they finish. Should you wish to stay the night before or after the race in Norrtälje, there are several opportunities, hotels as well as hostels. If you prefer to get back to Stockholm after having your well-deserved dinner and hanging out with your fellow runners, buses run ‘til late.
If you feel that very far is too far, there is also a relay. Five runners share the distance between them. The legs are approximately 10 km, 15 km, 21 km, 7 km and 15 km.
If you consider yourself not really a long distance runner, but rather an avid cyclist – then we have some good news for you! In 2015, we introduced Jättelångt MTB, held in the autumn. The start is in the village of Öregrund, situated by the sea some 150 km north of Stockholm. The paths (some of which are technical) and gravelled roads will take you to the finish line in Norrtälje, the same little town that hosts the Jättelångt Ultra Run finish.
And last… yes, Jättelångt is a race. We register times and we award prizes. But more than anything, Jättelångt is an experience. It’s exploring a part of Sweden in the most beautiful time of the year. It’s comradery between the runners. It’s local food and drink. It’s celebration. It’s… Jättelångt!
